Second LNG Terminal in Wilhelmshaven Goes Into Operation

Wilhelmshaven02, the second LNG terminal inWilhelmshaven operated by Deutsche Energy Terminal (DET), has commenced commercial operations today. With this, Germany gains additional import capacity for LNG. The start of operations follows several weeks of commissioning, test runs, and a series of functional and performance checks. The terminal had already received its regulatory approval for major accident prevention at the beginning of August.

According to DET, the terminal is expected to feedup to 1.9 billion cubic meters of natural gas into the German transmission grid in 2025, which corresponds to the consumption of 1.5 million four-person households in apartment buildings. This will also enable the terminal to contribute to filling gas storage facilities ahead of the next heating season. For 2026 and 2027, an injection of up to 4.6 billion cubic meters is planned, equivalent to the annual consumption of 3.7 million four-person households inapartment buildings.

In early July, DET offered a capacity allocationround for regasification capacities for 2025. The capacities offered there, aswell as all capacities for 2026, were fully booked.

At the Wilhelmshaven02 LNG terminal, the regasification vessel Excelsior operated by U.S.-based company Excelerate Energy is in use. Alongside an advanced gasexport system, Europe’s first ultrasonic antifouling technology will also bedeployed in regular operation.

DET has entrusted terminal operations to Gasfin Services, which had already acted as consultants during the planning and implementation phases. Wilhelmshaven02 is, after Brunsbüttel, the second DET terminal for which Gasfin assumes operational management. Marketing of capacities as well as maintenance and servicing of the terminal have been assigned to the Lithuanian company KN Energies, which is also responsible forthe maintenance of several LNG terminals in Lithuania and Brazil.
