Three Questions to Jörg Selbach-Röntgen, biogeen GmbH

Biomethane is regarded as one of the key building blocks of a climate-neutral energy system – particularly in areas where electrification reaches its limits. biogeen GmbH develops, plans, and operates biomethane and biogas plants and supports projects along the entire value chain – from feedstock processing to injection into the gas grid. As CEO, Jörg Selbach-Röntgen is responsible for the company’s strategic direction and drives the expansion of renewable gases in Germany and across Europe. In this interview, he explains the future role biomethane can play in the energy system, where the market stands today, and which political decisions are now required.

1. In your view, what role will biomethane play in a climate-neutral energy system in the future?
   
   Biomethane will play a key role in a climate-neutral energy system. It strengthens the resilience of the energy supply and makes us less dependent on geopolitical risks as well as on volatile natural gas and LNG prices. At the same time, biomethane enables climate protection in areas where direct electrification is difficult or cannot be implemented in time. Especially for industry, process heat, and other so-called “hard-to-abate” or “hard-to-abate-on-time” applications, biomethane is indispensable. It combines security of supply, climate protection, and the efficient use of existing infrastructure.
   
2. Where does the biomethane market stand today from your perspective?
   
   The biomethane market is currently at a turning point. Existing market potential is far from being fully exploited. In Germany, around 12 TWh of biomethane are currently produced per year; in the short term, however, volumes of up to 100 TWh are realistic. Interest in biomethane is growing significantly – particularly from industry, but also from municipal utilities. Developments in countries such as Italy, Spain, and France demonstrate the potential that can be unlocked when suitable political framework conditions are in place and the systemic benefits of biomethane are consistently leveraged.
   
   
3. What political measures are now needed to bring renewable gases to market more quickly?
   
   Above all, what is needed now is reliability. Planning and investment certainty for both new and existing plants is crucial to enable market ramp-up. Gas distribution networks should be maintained so that biomethane can continue to be used nationwide. In addition, grid connection conditions must be designed in a way that creates incentives for the construction of new and larger plants. Last but not least, approval processes need to be standardized and significantly accelerated in order to bring renewable gases to market more quickly.
