TÜV SÜD Recognized for Certifications of Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin
Voluntary certification schemes and national certification schemes of EU member states play an important role in proving that renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBO) are produced sustainably. At the end of last year, the European Commission approved the voluntary certification systems CertifHy EU, ISCC EU and REDcert EU for hydrogen and its derivatives for the European fuel quota market and in future also for industrial uses.
The Federal Environment Agency has now recognized TÜV SÜD Industrie Service GmbH as the responsible certification body for RFNBO certifications according to these standards. “We are delighted that we can now begin certifying the production and trade of green hydrogen and its derivatives,” says Klaus Nürnberger, Head of Energy Certification at TÜV SÜD Industrie Service GmbH. “This certification is an important contribution to the development and expansion of a functioning and sustainable hydrogen economy in Europe.”
TÜV SÜD has played a pioneering role for many years when it comes to the verification and marketability of green hydrogen. The activities include the development and continuous further development of the TÜV SÜD CMS 70 GreenHydrogen standard, various collaborations with developers of hydrogen certification systems for the European market as well as pre-certifications and pilot audits as part of pioneering project studies.
The experts are seeing a significant increase in inquiries for the certification of hydrogen production plants that are due to go into operation this year. For Klaus Nürnberger, this is a strong signal for the transition to a hydrogen economy: “The transformation is starting right now!”
