Bio-LNG: Cost-Effective Climate Protection for Heavy-Duty Transport Must Not Be Slowed Down

  • Bio-LNG enables climate-friendly heavy-duty transport at significantly lower and more stable costs than diesel.
  • Parliamentary conference “Bio-LNG in Logistics” highlights strong potential and the need for improved framework conditions.
  • Kehler: “Especially in the current energy crisis, domestic Bio-LNG is a real competitive advantage. This should be taken into account in the current discussions on reducing energy taxes on fuels.”

Bio-LNG is demonstrating its economic strength in the current energy crisis: this renewable fuel enables climate-friendly heavy-duty transport at significantly lower and more stable costs than fossil alternatives. It thus underlines its special role as an economically viable and at the same time nearly climate-neutral solution for heavy-duty transport. Against the backdrop of the current political debate on reducing energy taxes on fossil fuels, however, it is becoming clear that climate-friendly alternatives such as Bio-LNG risk falling behind once again.

The favorable and stable prices of Bio-LNG are no coincidence, but the result of regional and European value creation. Industry figures show that one kilogram of Bio-LNG currently costs less than €0.90 - less than half the price of a liter of diesel. This clear cost advantage is also driven by the greenhouse gas reduction quota (GHG quota), which provides additional revenue for producers of renewable fuels and thus helps keep fuel prices low. The fuel is produced predominantly from domestic and European residues and waste, making heavy-duty transport less dependent on volatile global energy markets.

These aspects were at the center of the parliamentary conference “Bio-LNG in Logistics: Strengthening competitiveness and reducing emissions with Bio-LNG,” hosted by the association Die Gas- und Wasserstoffwirtschaft on April 16, 2026, at the Deutsche Parlamentarische Gesellschaft in Berlin. Around 200 representatives from politics, logistics, the vehicle industry, and the energy sector discussed economic viability, practical experience, and the necessary political framework conditions for further market ramp-up of Bio-LNG.

In Germany, LNG trucks are already being operated almost entirely on Bio-LNG around 98.5 percent of the fuel used last year was renewable. Heavy-duty transport is therefore effectively climate-neutral. In addition, the infrastructure is well developed, with more than 200 LNG refueling stations, and the technology is mature.

Federal Minister of Food and Agriculture Alois Rainer explains: “Biogas is a regionally available and independent energy source. Decentralized biogas production is a key pillar of Germany’s crisis-resilient energy supply. It makes us less dependent on fossil energy imports. Biogas plants are also an important pillar of value creation in agriculture, forestry, and rural areas, securing tens of thousands of jobs. There are therefore good reasons to invest in strengthening bioenergy.”

“Especially in times of high energy prices, Bio-LNG is a real competitive advantage,” explains Timm Kehler. “Companies benefit from predictable and lower fuel costs while significantly reducing their emissions. This combination is unique. However, the fuel is still disadvantaged compared to fossil fuels, for example in road tolls. We are currently seeing this again in the debate on reducing energy taxes, which is being discussed only for fossil fuels. If diesel is relieved, renewable alternatives such as Bio-LNG must also be taken into account - otherwise climate protection in transport will be slowed down.”
