Fuel Prices: Include Bio-CNG and Bio-LNG in Relief Measures
Diesel prices in Germany have reached a new record high, further intensifying cost pressures on the transport and logistics sector. As policymakers discuss relief measures for transport, they must ensure equal tax and regulatory treatment for biomethane, says Dr Timm Kehler, CEO of the German Gas and Hydrogen Industry Association:
“Anyone seeking to provide lasting relief for the transport industry must also address truck tolls. The substantial climate benefits of bio-CNG and bio-LNG must be reflected in a reduced CO₂ component of the toll. The German government should create the necessary legal framework. Companies using biomethane need an economic incentive for climate-friendly transport. Currently, trucks running on this renewable fuel pay the same toll rate as vehicles powered by fossil diesel.
Bio-LNG is already available today: in the first half of 2026, biomethane accounted for 100 per cent of LNG sold at filling stations in Germany. Filling stations and vehicles demonstrate their capabilities every day. Producers and haulage companies have already made investments, and this commitment should be rewarded through lower tolls.
Bio-CNG and bio-LNG must also receive equal consideration in any new measures to tackle high fuel prices. They were excluded from the energy tax reduction in May and June, while petrol, diesel and fuels such as HVO benefited. This must not happen again: those who have already invested in renewable fuels must not be left out of relief measures.”
