Luca Magnussen Retains McLaren Trophy Lead in Barcelona

The Danish racing talent secured his fifth podium of the season in the fourth round of the McLaren Trophy Europe in Barcelona – and retained the championship lead ahead of the season finale.

Luca Magnussen remains on course for what could become the first championship title of his career. The Danish racing driver, who is supported by, among others, premium meat producer SASHI and tech company Admin By Request, retained the lead in the McLaren Trophy Europe following the penultimate round of the season at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya last weekend.

Magnussen and teammate Callum Davies secured a podium finish in the first race of the weekend, extending the Paddock Motorsport duo’s impressive run of claiming at least one podium at every round so far this season. That consistency has been key to keeping the pair at the top of the highly competitive Pro class.

Magnussen made a strong start to the weekend on Saturday. The Dane qualified the car fourth overall before delivering an impressive opening stint, working his way through the field and handing the car over to Davies from the lead.

“I think it was a really solid weekend. I had great pace in the car both in qualifying and during the first half of Saturday’s race. I qualified us fourth overall and managed to work my way into the lead before handing the car over to Callum. It was great to be able to show the pace we had,” said Luca Magnussen.

Davies crossed the finish line in third place, which was subsequently promoted to second following a penalty for a competitor. The result gave Magnussen and Davies their fifth podium of the season and another valuable haul of championship points.

Sunday proved considerably more challenging. Severe weather, including storms, heavy rain and flooding in the Barcelona area, forced both practice and qualifying to be cancelled. However, with the starting grid determined by the championship standings, the championship leaders were handed pole position for the second race of the weekend.

Their hopes of another strong result suffered an early setback when Davies encountered gearbox problems from the start. The issues continued throughout the race, and the pair eventually had to settle for fifth place.

“Of course, we had hoped for more on Sunday, especially as we were starting from pole position. Unfortunately, Callum started having problems with the gear shifts already on the run down to Turn 1, and it only got worse from there. That cost us the chance of another big result, but we brought the car home and scored some important points. Ultimately, it’s all about the championship, and we still have the best possible position going into the finale,” said Luca Magnussen.

With second and fifth-place finishes, Magnussen and Davies leave Barcelona with their championship lead intact. The Paddock Motorsport duo can therefore head into the fifth and final round of the season at the top of the standings. The finale takes place in just two weeks at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve in Portimão, Portugal.
