The year of architecture at M/S: From Dry Dock to BIG dock

Free guided architectural tour in English every first Saturday of the month, March-September 2023 at 1:30 PM

UNESCO has chosen Copenhagen as the World Capital of Architecture in 2023. At The Maritime Museum of Denmark you will experience a piece of iconic architecture built below ground and around Elisnore shipyards old dry dock in front of Kronborg Castle.
The award winning architecture is designed by the internationally renowned architects from BIG – Bjarke Ingels Group.

Join us for a free guided architectural tour that goes behind the scenes of creating Denmark’s new Maritime Museum in the old dock. Listen to the story behind how the museum moved from Kronborg Castle to the dock, about the architectural competition, BIG's winning proposal and the very complicated building process. We will finish off the tour with the tale of how the actual move took place into this unique underground architectural backdrop, and we will see examples of how the maritime history is presented in the exhibitions that were created by leading international exhibition designers.

World-class architecture

From a distance the museum is almost invisible. Suddenly, one encounters the abyss of an old concrete dry dock, traversed by glass and aluminium-clad bridges and stairs, arranged as a dramatic, multi-angular composition. The dock was a part of one of Denmark's most significant and progressive modern shipyards from 1882 to 1985.

Length: Approx. 45 minutes

Price: The guided tour is included in the regular ticket price, but in order to secure a spot ALL participants must pre-order tickets. Please choose option "Arrangement og entrébillet til voksen" when buying your ticket. Attention: Half of the tour takes place outdoors, and we therefore recommend that you dress accordingly.
