The Almond Blossom Festival in Tejeda (Gran Canaria), declared of National Tourist Interest

The Almond Blossom Festival in Tejeda (Gran Canaria) has been declared of National Tourist Interest after the signing of the declaration by the Spanish Secretary of State for Tourism, Fernando Valdés.

“In one of the most beautiful towns in Spain, a biosphere reserve and an essential part of the landscape of Risco Caído and the Sacred Mountains -a UNESCO World Heritage Site-, one of the key cultural winter events of the archipelago, together with the Carnivals, takes place every first weekend in February. It is an authentic explosion of colour that immerses you in the depths of Canarian customs and traditions”, declared the Secretary of State for Tourism, Fernando Valdés.

Gastronomy and folklore

During the Almond Blossom Festival, all the neighbourhoods of the municipality take part in the celebration. The neighbourhood associations decorate stalls located along the main street, where the locals, dressed in their typical costumes, offer tastings of Canarian dishes and traditional products to visitors, who can also find craft, food and drink stalls. The city council helps NGOs and other non-profit organisations to get their own stalls too.

During the festival, there are musical performances by Canarian folk groups, but also presentations of local sports and games such as the Canarian wrestling, the game of the stick or the shepherd's leap.

The Almond Blossom Festival in Tejeda was born as a way to celebrate not only the blossom of the fields, but also to help preserve traditions and the local features.
