The Norwegian hydrogen company Hydrogen Solutions AS (HYDS) plans to build a hydrogen electrolyser and thereby establish production of green hydrogen at the Port of Gothenburg. The investment strengthens the port’s role as a hub for fossil-free fuels and enables the transition of several transport modes in and around the port. Hydrogen production is planned to be operational by 2029.
The Port of Gothenburg and Castellum are continuing the development of the expanding logistics area Halvorsäng in Gothenburg and are now constructing a new building of 8,667 sqm, half of which will be leased by plastics company Vink Esså Plast Group AB. The project is carried out within the framework of the joint company through which the parties are developing Halvorsäng.
Project Skandia Gateway has won the SGB Award for Sustainable Infrastructure. Through climate-smart solutions, the project achieved a 30% reduction in CO₂ emissions at an additional cost of only 1% of the total budget, proving that major infrastructure can be both sustainable and cost-effective.
The Port of Gothenburg continues to strengthen its position as the Nordic region’s leading freight hub. During the first three quarters of 2025, container volumes rose by four percent, reaching record levels both at the quayside and on the rail network. RoRo traffic is also showing renewed growth after a slower period, while car and energy volumes have declined.
On October 26, the French shipping company CMA CGM launched a new direct service between the Port of Gothenburg and Asia. Together with the services operated by Maersk/Hapag-Lloyd and MSC, the port now has three direct lines for containers to and from Asia every week.
The Swedish Maritime Administration and the Port of Gothenburg are cancelling the joint procurement process for dredging works within the Skandia Gateway project. The reason is that the bids received exceed the budgeted costs for the state-funded portion of the project.

Furetank has secured large-scale access to biogas and from 2025, will be able to operate its entire EU-based fleet fossil-free. Today, the majority run on biogas, and Fure Valö demonstrated completely fossil-free operation at the Donsö Shipping Meet with HVO100 bunkered in the Port of Gothenburg. The Port of Gothenburg views this initiative as an important step in the green transition of shipping.
The Port of Gothenburg now offers two direct container services to Asia, enhancing access for Swedish industries. The new Gemini Alliance service begins alongside MSC's existing service, increasing sailing frequency and connectivity to multiple Chinese ports, benefiting trade efficiency.
Höegh Autoliners today celebrated the naming of its sixth Aurora-Class vessel in commercial operation at the Port of Gothenburg. The vessel was sponsored by Mrs Jenny Westermark, Senior Vice President, GTO Production Logistics at Volvo Group, who performed the traditional bottle-breaking. An array of sustainable Volvo Group cargo provided a spectacular showpiece for the proceedings.
The Port of Gothenburg continued its positive growth trajectory in the first half of the year, handling 470,000 containers (TEU*). Efficiency improvements were also noted, driven by a higher share of fully loaded containers and reduced repositioning of empty units. At the same time, rail freight to and from the port reached record levels.
Starting in Week 35, the Port of Gothenburg will be added to the updated Asia–Europe service AE5/NE4, operated by the Gemini Cooperation – a strategic alliance between Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd. Strengthening Gothenburg’s role as a logistics hub and providing Swedish industry with more sustainable and competitive transport options.
