Haglöfs needs to pick up the pace to reach net zero by 2030

With growth comes responsibility and - as Haglöfs’ 2022 Sustainability Report makes clear - they still have a lot of work to do. For the second year in a row, Haglöfs is reporting a significant increase in their overall carbon footprint due to a rise in production.

Today, Haglöfs releases its new Sustainability Report which reveals progress made during the 2022 calendar year on efforts related to promoting responsible consumption and production, contributing to decent working conditions, and taking climate action. Despite a challenging marketplace in 2022, demand for outdoor gear remained high. As Haglöfs increased their planned production—by 40% compared to 2021— they also increased manufacturing-related emissions.

“The year in review strongly underscores the need to pick up the pace and adjust our roadmap to ensure we can meet our emission reduction goals on time,” says Fredrik Ohlsson, CEO at Haglöfs. “We remain steadfast in our commitment to reach net zero by 2030 and will continue to take full responsibility for our emissions in the meantime, by compensating for them with high-quality offsets.”

During 2022, Haglöfs continued to roll out actions aimed at reducing their carbon footprint. One example is their updated their Sourcing Strategy, which aims to accelerate the consolidation of material producers and assembly factories, and thus gain greater leverage to increase the use of renewable energy and lower-impact materials.

However, as Haglöfs’ Sustainability Report shows, progress was only visible in the scope of their own operations. Actions taken to reduce emissions attributed to the manufacturing of their gear - the scope where majority of their emissions occur - were outpaced by increased production.

In order to achieve their goal of reaching net zero by 2030, Haglöfs reports plans to accelerate and scale up the work outlined in their Roadmap. Among other actions, they will continue work to increase the amount of lower-impact materials used in their collections, transition to more efficient factories and production processes while phasing out the use of coal, and use more renewable energy throughout their supply chain.
