Three medals for HEAD athletes at the FWT Championship

One silver and two bronze medals was handed out to HEAD athletes subsequent to the final in the Freeride World Tour. Norway’s Hedvig Wessel finished second overall in Ski women, Carl Regnér from Sweden third among the men and the Briton Cody Bramwell clinched the last spot on the male snowboarder’s overall podium.

The silver in the women’s category was however bittersweet for Hedvig, who was on the verge of claiming the overall title already last spring but didn’t get the chance when the world closed down due to the pandemic and the final was cancelled. This year she once again had the title within close reach, but after finishing third in the final she ended up 20 points behind the winner in Verbier and consequentially overall champion, Elisabeth Gerritzen. 27 620 to 27 600 points.

Carl Regnér’s bronze in the overall was on the contrary a pleasant surprise. His last appearance in Verbier, back in 2019, ended dramatically with a massive crash, but this year he skied with confidence and style. The Swede, who is known for his deep bag of freestyle tricks, even launched a flat 3 – a trick that he talked about doing in competition but so far never had – and was awarded with the fifth best score of the day. Those points were enough to swing him up from a fifth to a third place in the overall ranking.

Talking about tricks, New Zealander Blake Marshall also pleased the digital audience with a gymnastic gem. Towards the end of his run, he threw a bio 720 from a rather unexpected feature. And even though freestyle elements are more or less mandatory these days, Blake managed to wow the judges and get picked as the “Radical moment” of the day. Blake finished 9th overall.

HEAD Snowboarder Cody Bramwell’s third place in the total wasn’t delivered with the same shock value. Nevertheless, he has developed from a rookie with focus to just stay on the tour last year, to a contender for the big awards this season.

Two of the originally planned stops, Japan and Canada, had to be cut out due to COVID but when everything finally started, it went off with a bang. Two separate “stops” on the same face in Ordino Arcalis, Andorra, ended with both highs and lows for the HEAD riders.
