More TransAtlantic at the Port of Gothenburg

TransAtlantic is expanding its traffic via the Port of Gothenburg by adding the port to its container service between Finland and Germany. This move will reinforce the position of the Port of Gothenburg as the most important freight hub in Scandinavia.

Commencing on August 16, the shipping company TransAtlantic will incorporate Gothenburg into its container feeder line between Finland and Germany. The loop comprises Uleåborg – Torneå – Mäntyluoto – Gothenburg – Hamburg – Bremerhaven.

"It is extremely exciting to have yet another feeder operator on the Finland-Gothenburg route. TransAtlantic is a new customer for us and the fact that they have chosen Gothenburg is a reflection of our competitiveness and strength," says Hans Gutsch, account manager at the Port of Gothenburg Skandia Container Terminal.

The type of freight varies although the basis of this line expansion is the need to transport paper products from Stora Enso's paper mills in Finland.

TransAtlantic already puts into Gothenburg through its ro/ro service between Finland and Gothenburg. This new development is a response to market needs and is a strategic decision.

Kent Tullock is Vice President and Head of RoRo Baltic at TransAtlantic: "It is part of TransAtlantic's strategy to reinforce our presence in northern Finland. It is a strategically important area for both the container and ro/ro segments and Gothenburg is the obvious choice in Sweden."

Magnus Kårestedt, chief executive of the Port of Gothenburg Port Authority, states: "We are naturally extremely pleased that TransAtlantic has also chosen to include Gothenburg in its container service. The Port of Gothenburg is the largest port in Scandinavia and in many ways mirrors the state of the economy. This development is a further sign of the recovery that we have noted during the first half of the year."
