Port of Gothenburg guided tours a success

When the Port of Gothenburg arranged guided boat tours of the harbour during the summer, the response was overwhelming. 1,000 people took the opportunity to see the largest port in Scandinavia.

The Port of Gothenburg handles more freight than all the other ports in Sweden combined and it deals with a large proportion of Scandinavian imports and exports. Unfortunately, ever since freight handling moved from the centre of the city to the outer harbours on Hisingen, many of the people in Gothenburg have lost contact with the port. To change this, the Port of Gothenburg and the Maritime Museum Aquarium have arranged guided boat tours for the general public. During the summer, for the second year in succession, 1,000 people took the opportunity to come along and experience the port at close quarters.

The tours were linked to the Maritime Museum Aquarium’s ‘City Along the Water’ exhibition. Both last year and this year, the port tours were completely sold out.

"There has been enormous interest. We regard this as confirmation that the people of Gothenburg are very interested in their port," says Åsa Kjellberg, Head of Events at the Port of Gothenburg.

During the autumn, the port tours will continue for groups of students from schools in the Gothenburg area. Around 500 children will have the chance to see the port from the water and at the same time learn more about what takes place in the port and the significance of the port to the community.

Åsa Kjellberg explains: "Our aim is to help people become more aware of the shipping industry and the development of the Port of Gothenburg and directing our attention to school students is an obvious part of this.”
