Press release -

Port of Gothenburg makes the city cleaner and quieter

This week the Port of Gothenburg will set up two charging posts for electric cars outside the head office at Amerikaskjulet. All visitors to Amerikaskjulet can charge their electric cars at no cost. Staff at the Port of Gothenburg will also have an electric car at their disposal that can be used for work-related transport.

The aim is for the Port of Gothenburg to be a carbon-neutral company by 2015. As part of this plan, the port has now joined the 'Charge Gothenburg' project, initiated by Göteborg Energi, Volvo and Chalmers University of Technology. The aim is for more people to drive electric cars and contribute to a cleaner, quieter city.

Two charging posts are currently being erected outside Amerikaskjulet at Stigbergskajen, which is where the Port of Gothenburg has its head office. Both employees and visitors can charge their electric cars at no cost. The electricity supplied at the charging posts is local, wind-generated electricity, which means that the cars can be run with zero carbon emissions.

"Åsa Wilske, Environmental Manager at the Port of Gothenburg, stated: "We want to support the development of green transport. Offering charging points for electric cars will make it easier for visitors and staff to use electric cars."

As part of the project, the Port of Gothenburg will receive an electric car, a Volvo C30 Electric, for use as a company car.

Ulf Östermark of Göteborg Energi stated: "By allowing our partners in Charge Gothenburg to test-drive the Volvo C30 Electric for a time we can see how they feel about driving and charging an electric car. This will tell us a great deal about what is needed to build up the charging infrastructure of the future."

The aim of the investment is to bring about a cleaner city and to meet the call by the EU to reduce carbon emissions by 20 per cent by 2020. To date, Charge Gothenburg has erected around 90 charging points at strategic locations throughout the city, including Liseberg and Nordstan.
