2025 Radon Week: Key Outcomes and Collaborative Milestones
The 2025 Radon Week, held in Warsaw, Poland, from November 3–6, served as a critical platform for advancing radon mitigation and public awareness. The event successfully unified researchers, policymakers, and industry professionals through two main European Radon Association (ERA) cornerstone events: the ERA Workshop and the ROOMS (Radon Outcomes on Mitigation Solutions) conference.
Key Participants and Collaboration
-
Radonova Laboratories, an active ERA member, participated as an exhibitor, using the week to strengthen relationships with partners, customers, and experts across Europe.
- Zuzanna Podgórska from Radonova Poland emphasized the power of collaboration: “It’s always inspiring to see how knowledge-sharing and collaboration can drive the radon field forward. The discussions this week clearly reflected a shared commitment to reducing radon exposure and improving public health.”
- Warsaw University of Technology co-hosted the ROOMS conference, marking the beginning of a new partnership in radon research.
Core Events and Themes
ERA Workshop: "Radon in Workplaces: from Awareness to Mitigation"
- The workshop focused on addressing radon in commercial and governmental workplaces.
- Contributions featured international perspectives from Italy, Belgium, Sweden, and Norway.
- Topics included national regulatory frameworks, databases, and specific mitigation strategies for complex structures like shopping centers.
ROOMS Conference
- Organized under the patronage of the National Atomic Energy Agency of Poland (Państwowa Agencja Atomistyki).
- The conference focused on sharing practical mitigation cases and experience-based insights from professionals.
- The opening keynote, "A Short History of the Uranium Mine," was delivered by Monika Skotniczna (National Atomic Energy Agency), detailing the history of radon and radiation research.
- This was the first time the ROOMS conference was hosted in Warsaw.
Event Highlights
- World Café Session: Encouraged participants to generate ideas for future European Radon Days and improvements to the ERA and ROOMS event formats.
- Marie Curie Legacy: The week concluded on European Radon Day (November 7), the birthday of Marie Skłodowska-Curie. Attendees visited the Marie Curie Museum, guided by Zuzanna Podgórska who previously worked at the museum.
- The 2025 European Radon Day theme was “How did Marie Curie Change your Life? The Legacy of Marie Curie,” linking scientific heritage to modern public health efforts.
José-Luis Gutiérrez Villanueva, Secretary of the ERA, summarized the success: “The caliber of presentations was exceptional, but it was the open, constructive dialogue between delegates that truly defined the event... helping to bridge the gap between research and practical action.”
