Can you walk the walk? We need volunteers!

Volunteers are needed to lead scenic walks across the borough which will help to keep local residents fit and well.

A range of Walking for Health walks is planned for autumn, and the Bury Walk with Me team is looking for new recruits to complement their existing walk leaders.

Hundreds of Bury people have benefitted from scores of walks organised across the borough in recent years, which have taken in Summerseat, the Kirklees Trail, Heaton Park, Birtle, Prestwich Clough, Ainsworth, Elton, Radcliffe and more.

Here’s how Brian, one of the current walk leaders, got involved:

“I first started walking two years ago after a “mild” heart attack. Learning that more volunteers were needed to help lead the walks, I put my name forward for training to become a Volunteer Walk Leader, believing I’d be more likely to stick to the exercise regime if others were relying on me to turn up.

“I now lead or co-lead a number of weekly walks for the scheme, including the Saturday Prestwich walk, the new Ainsworth walk and the Friday Burrs walk. I enjoy meeting the many people who join in the walks, and that provides me with yet another incentive to keep active.

“I also assist with the scheme’s walk photography which is often then used in the quarterly walks programmes.”

A volunteer walk leader training session has been organised for Monday 24 September.
