Carers Week 2025 - Caring About Equality

Press release -

Carers Week 2025 - Caring About Equality

It’s Carers Week – the annual campaign to raise awareness of caring, highlight the challenges unpaid carers face, and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK.

It also helps people who don't think of themselves as having caring responsibilities to identify as carers and access much-needed support.

This year the theme is 'Caring About Equality' highlighting the inequalities faced by unpaid carers, including a greater risk of poverty, social isolation, poor mental and physical health. Far too often, carers of all ages miss out on opportunities in their education, careers, or personal lives, just because of their caring role.

A carer is anyone who looks after a family member or friend who has a disability, mental or physical illness, addiction, or who needs extra help as they grow older.

The 2021 Census shows:

there are more than 18,200 carers in Bury.

4.5% of Bury residents (aged five years and over) reported providing up to 19 hours of unpaid care each week.

2.9% provided more than 50 hours every week

At Bury we value our unpaid carers who give their time selflessly to provide care for loved ones and friends. As such it is right that we are a leading local authority that recognises carers as a protected characteristic, meaning we give equal recognition to carers, as we do all of the protected characteristics listed in the Equality Act 2010.

Councillor Tamoor Tariq, cabinet member for health and wellbeing, said: “Carers Week is an opportunity to recognise the incredible contribution unpaid carers make to our communities every day. This year’s theme, ‘Caring about Equality’, reminds us that caring should never come at the cost of opportunity, wellbeing, or dignity. As a council, we are committed to ensuring that every carer - regardless of age, background, or circumstance - has equal access to the support, resources, and respect they deserve.”

Bury Carers’ Hub

Bury Carers’ Hub provides information, advice and a wide range of specialist support services designed to help carers continue in their caring role for as long as they choose and reduce the impact the caring role can have on their own health and wellbeing.

They work directly with individual carers to discuss their concerns and needs and design a tailored personalised support package.

The first event in Bury during Carers Week took place today (Mon 9 June), with card games and bingo at the Sir Robert Peel in Sunnybank Road, Bury. There was also an information stand at Fairfield General Hospital.
