Press release -
Consultation opens for new Council Tax Support Scheme
Councillors have approved a proposed new working age Council Tax Support (CTS) Scheme for consultation with Bury’s residents.
The new proposals are designed to ensure that the working age CTS scheme is fairer to working families on a low income, is easier to understand for the 7500 people who receive it and is more efficient and sustainable.
We are looking to:
- only include earned income in the assessment - this means that Universal Credit will not be taken into account
- have broader income ‘bands’ used for assessment
- introduce a £40.00 per month flat rate non-dependent deduction
This does not affect pensioners. The council tax support scheme for people of state pension age is set by central government and cannot be changed by local councils.
Consultation on the new scheme has now begun and will run until 11 December 2025.
