Diagnosis and support available if you think you may have dementia
If you are concerned that someone you know or yourself are showing signs of dementia it’s important to get an early diagnosis.
During Dementia Action Week (May 13 to May 19) we’ll be sharing dementia support information and resources that are available to anyone who wants to learn more about dementia and the support available for anyone affected by dementia.
The theme this year is improving dementia diagnosis rates which is vital to give people care, treatment and support they need.
Lead by the Alzheimer's Society, the week is an opportunity to raise awareness of dementia and encourage people to act.
There’s several events taking place in Bury.

"Getting a diagnosis is one of the most important things people can do if they are worried about dementia," said a council spokesperson.
"it's estimated that 1 in 3 people with dementia do not have a diagnosis in the UK and by getting that diagnosis people can get the support that is available.
“Our aim is to work to improve the health, wellbeing, and quality of life for people in Bury living with dementia. We place a strong emphasis on prevention and early intervention by taking a strength-based approach – which means identifying an individual’s strengths and capabilities and to support people to maximise those strengths to promote independence and improve quality of life.
“Through working together we develop links between services and communities, making sure that people living with dementia, and their families and carers, are seen and heard, to enable people to receive timely and appropriate support."
Events during the week
- Tuesday 14 May, 11am-1pm - Goat’s Gate Inn Pub in Whitefield - Dementia Support Group with attendance from The Alzheimer’s Society to provide information and advice.
- Wednesday 15 May, 11am-3pm : Time for a cuppa event hosted by Home Instead, 116A Bury New Road, Manchester M45 6AD. Pop in and join in for a cake, a cup of tea, games and prizes.
- Thursday 16 May: Tesco- Prestwich from 9.30am until lunch time there will be a stall from The Alzheimer’s Society and information and advice available from The Alzheimer’s Society.
- Thursday 16 May, 4.30-6.30pm - Dementia United’s online delirium training session for carers. The training will cover: What is delirium? How to prevent delirium; Identifying the causes and signs of delirium; Getting help when you need it. You can find out more and register here:
DELIRIUM ONLINE TRAINING FOR FAMILY MEMBERS AND CARERS - DURING DEMENTIA ACTION WEEK - Dementia United (dementia-united.org.uk) - Monday 20 May, 10am-3pm - Shared Lives dementia champion available at the drop in at the Green Café, Clarence Park, Walmersley Road.
