Get thee to a library! Events to celebrate 400 years of Shakespeare

A wide variety of events is being organised by Bury Libraries and archive department to celebrate the life and work of William Shakespeare in this, the 400th year since his death.

One of these is a competition to win a £30 book token, centred on a collection of props featured in five of Shakespeare’s most famous plays, open to all users of Bury libraries.

Although the display cabinet containing the items will be viewable at Bury Library, images of the items, competition questions, rules and entry forms will be distributed to other libraries in the borough. In addition to the competition, staff will be giving away commemorative postcards and bookmarks and encouraging residents to borrow books, DVDs and audio material to help them discover (and re-discover) the fabulous world of William Shakespeare.

As Shakespeare’s work was meant to be performed, some professional readings of Shakespearean soliloquies, sonnets and famous quotes are being organised. These quotes will also be translated into local dialects, modern-day slang and teenage culture which will then be used to create a podcast.

The competition will open on 1 April. Further details of this and other events will be posted here:https://buryculture.wordpress.com/2016/03/15/commemorating-shakespeare-400/

If you would like to reserve a book about Shakespeare or his work, visit the online library catalogue: http://library.bury.gov.uk/search/
