Hard of hearing? Call on us for help
Residents who are hard of hearing are taking advantage of specialist help being offered at the library.
Advice and equipment is available from the Sensory Impairment Unit which is based at Whitefield Library and Adult Learning Centre.
One recent customer is Caroline Brice, who was concerned that her 86-year-old mother was missing calls and appointments due to difficulties in using her existing phone.
Caroline, who lives in Whitefield, said: “My mum Irene was finding it extremely difficult to use a normal phone; it was frustrating for her and worrying for me as she couldn’t hear messages properly.
“When we both visited the sensory unit, Lenke, the sensory impairment officer, was extremely patient and helpful in showing us the different types of telephones available with amplification, including some BT telephones. Mum could then try them before committing to a new phone. I am really pleased with the service and help we received and my mum is much happier with a phone she is now able to use fully.”
The sensory unit provides a library and information service plus a wide range of resources to people who are deaf, hard of hearing, blind or partially sighted.
