Improvements coming to Ramsbottom Market Place

Work begins next week at Market Place in Ramsbottom, bringing new planting and a series of changes to help brighten up this well-known town centre space.

The work forms part of the wider Ramsbottom Greening Project, being delivered by Bury Council and local partners, to create greener and more attractive spaces at a number of locations around the town.

The first phase includes work to the existing walls, railings, paving and other features around the planting beds. Stone coping stones will be refixed and secured, while the metal railings around the raised beds will be repainted.

Loose and uneven stone flags along the top of the steps will also be re-laid, loose bollards will be secured and drainage in the area will be cleared.

Work will also take place around the small stone feature known locally as the ‘castle’.

A new raised planting bed will be created in front of it, the existing datestone will be repositioned so that it can be seen more easily, and the interpretation panel will be updated and moved to a more suitable location. The central ‘Urn’ sculpture and its immediate setting will remain as they are.

Once these works are complete, attention will turn to the planting. Some of the existing evergreen shrubs and selected trees will be removed to make way for a colourful mix of perennials, grasses and bulbs, chosen to provide colour and interest throughout the year. Existing planting cared for by Ramsbottom Civic Pride will be retained, with the new planting designed to complement the care already given to the area by local volunteers.

It’s a familiar part of the town centre and we hope these changes will make the area more attractive and welcoming, while building on the features that are already there. The new planting will bring more colour and interest throughout the year, and we’re looking forward to seeing everything take shape over the coming months.”
