Join the MadLab code roadshow this winter

Three free coding workshops are coming to Bury thanks to MadLab, CodeUp Manchester and Bury Libraries.

Adults can get to grips with the basics of coding with Programming 101, take an introduction to the world of electronics and Get the Bug for Coding with Codebug, or free your creative side with Build a Game with Javascript.

Each session costs £3, which is refunded on completing the workshop (or you can choose to make it a donation to MadLab).

To sign up, visit MadLab's Eventbrite page at the following link:

The events:

Programming 101

Wednesday 2 December

Bury Library: 9.30 to 12.30pm
Prestwich Library: 2pm to 5pm

This workshop is for complete beginners.

Programming 101 is a whistle-stop tour of everything programming languages can do. This practical session will use Python, a language that is beginner-friendly, but still presents enough of a challenge to be interesting (think of it a bit like those bumper lanes at the ten-pin bowling alley). The workshop covers the differences between ‘natural language’ and ‘formal language’, and functions common to nearly all programming languages: data types, inputs and outputs, data structures and loops. You’ll also create your first program!

Get the Bug for Coding with Codebug

Wednesday 9 December

Bury Library: 9.30am to 12.30pm
Prestwich Library: 2pm to 5pm

This workshop is aimed at programming and electronics beginners.

Codebug is a fun and engaging entry-level introduction to coding and physical electronics. In just a few clicks you’ll program the versatile little Codebug computer to display your own message. This workshop will provide an introduction to easy drag-and-drop programming and electronics with Codebug. You will learn how to create scrolling name badges, animated graphics and touch-responsive Apps.

Make a Game with Javascript

Wednesday 16 December

Bury Library: 9.30am to 12.30pm

Suitable for complete beginners, although attending Programming 101 first would be advantageous

This workshop uses basic programming techniques to build a simple game. Javascript is a great starting language: it is the language of the web, and allows websites to be interactive. Learning Javascript will enable you to make mobile apps, video games, animations, fly drones, control robots and much much more!
