Newspaper archives at your local library

Fascinating glimpses into local life from many decades ago can be viewed by visitors to Bury’s libraries.

Newspaper archives going back to pre-Victorian days are available on Microfilm, and you can read them by booking a film reader at the relevant location (see below).

The first 60 years of the Bury Times, from 1855 to 1909, is now indexed on the British Library's British Newspaper Archive.

You can search the index for references at http://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/ and then call into the library to read the articles or carry out further research.

Local journals include:

  • Bury Guardian, 1857-1935 – at Bury Archives and Family History
  • Bury Times, 1855 to present day – Bury Archives/Family History
  • Manchester Mercury, 1752-1830 – Bury Archives/Family History
  • Prestwich & Whitefield Guide, 1921-26 and 1946 to present day – Prestwich Library
