Try crown green bowling for free in Prestwich this Saturday

Local women, girls and families are invited to try crown green bowling for free on Saturday 30 April at Prestwich Cricket Tennis and Bowling Club.

It starts at 1pm at the Heys Road club, and there’s no need to book – simply turn up!

The open day is being organised by Prestwich Bowling Club and offers the perfect opportunity for people of all ages and abilities to have a go at bowls, find out more about the club and meet new people.

Janet Austin, chairman, said: “Bowls is a fun non-contact sport which can be enjoyed by everyone.

“If you’re thinking of taking up a new hobby, either to keep active or to improve your social life, then do come along to our open day and give bowls a try for free. You don’t need any prior experience as our coaches and members will be on hand to show you how to play. All you need is a pair of sensible flat shoes.”

Prestwich Bowling Club is working in partnership with I Will If You Will (IWIYW) – the female fitness movement delivered by Bury Council with National Lottery funds from Sports England – to help get more women and girls active.

Sean Gibson, IWIYW Locality Officer, said: “We’ve recently awarded £360 of funding to the club to invest in women’s bowling equipment to help encourage more women and girls to get into the sport. We’re hoping some local ladies will get together to come along and try their hand at bowls.”

About I Will If You Will

I Will If You Will is focused on changing women’s and girls’ behaviours towards taking part in sport and physical activity with the aim of getting more women and girls being more active, more often, and helping improve the health and wellbeing of people in Bury.

It aims to overcome the many practical and emotional barriers to being active, while encouraging women to support each other by joining the I Will If You Will community.

The Phase One campaign (2013–14) was delivered by Bury Council with £2.3 million of National Lottery funding from Sport England. For the Phase Two campaign (2015–16), Sport England has allocated a further £2 million to extend delivery.

The successful IWIYW pilot campaign identified valuable insight and helped develop the foundations for Sport England’s national This Girl Can campaign, which launched in January 2015, as well as Sport England’s practical guide to helping women and girls get active (www.sportengland.org/womenandgirls).
