Victorian Christmas at Bury Art Museum

Press release -

Victorian Christmas at Bury Art Museum

Join Bury Art Museum this Saturday (10 Dec) for its Celebrating Christmas event, a full day of activities for the whole family with a Victorian Christmas theme.

There will be the three ghosts of Christmas visiting the gallery along with storytelling, carol singing, decoration making, a drawing event and a visit from The Anti-Santas.

The day will start with a decorations workshop, where children and adults will be able to make their own lit-up personalised Christmas decorations.

There will also be carol singing from Bury Acapeelers around Tina's Tea Room in the beautiful Ring Balcony space.

Victorian Christmases always involved a visit from the Anti-Santa, also known as Krampus. He was a big part of the Victorian Christmas tradition, punishing naughty children who had misbehaved.

There will be no punishments handed out on Saturday though! Three Anti-Santas will be interviewed from 11.30am by professional children’s storyteller Professor Jigget, but will still be on the lookout for naughty children before Christmas.

Those wishing to learn more about the gallery’s collection of Christmas paintings are invited to a free talk at 1pm where gallery tour guides will talk about the artists, the work and their history.

There will also be a “Thank Art” drawing event with costumed models from 1.30pm based on Charles Dickens’s “A Christmas Carol”. Expect Scrooge, spirits, music and cheer!

Throughout the day there will be a 10% discount on all products bought from the art shop, located on the first floor of the gallery, which stocks unique gifts, cards, and wrapping paper made by artists across the UK.

Doors open at 10am on Saturday 10 December with activities running until 4.30pm. It’s free entry to the event, with a small charge for some activities. For a full list of times and events, visit http://buryartmuseum.co.uk/Christmas

or call the museum on 0161 253 5878.

Bury Art Museum is located on Moss Street, Bury, next door to Bury Library and opposite Bury bus and Metrolink interchange.
