The Prestwich library re-opened at The Phoenix Centre

Press release

Welcome back – your Prestwich Library reopens at Phoenix Centre

Prestwich Library is set to reopen in its temporary location at the Phoenix Centre, bringing back vital services to the local community.

Following a programme of adaptation works, the library will welcome visitors from Thursday, 28 May 2026, operating from the Phoenix Centre until its permanent new home is completed in Prestwich Village Centre as part of the £100 million redevelopment of the Longfield Centre.

Located within the accessible St Mary’s Park, the Phoenix Centre sits close to other community facilities and benefits from strong public transport links. Visitors can also enjoy the surrounding Green Flag park, offering an ideal opportunity to combine a library visit with time outdoors.

The reopening follows a slightly longer preparation period than originally anticipated. However, work has been ongoing behind the scenes to ensure the space is ready to provide a high-quality service for residents.

Jackie Veal, Head of Wellness and Culture, said: “We know how important Prestwich Library is to the local community and we’re delighted to be reopening at the Phoenix Centre. We’d like to thank residents for their patience and understanding while we prepared the space. Our teams have been working hard to get everything ready, and we’re really looking forward to welcoming everyone back.”

Library opening hours at the Phoenix Centre are unchanged:

  • Tuesday: 10.00am – 4.30pm
  • Wednesday: 10.00am – 4.30pm
  • Thursday: 12.30pm – 7.00pm
  • Friday: 10.00am – 4.30pm
  • Sunday: 9.30am – 1.00pm

The Phoenix Centre will offer a range of core library services, including:

  • Reading provision for all ages
  • Free computer and Wi-Fi access
  • Study and community space
  • Children’s library activities

Residents are encouraged to visit and make the most of the facilities as the library embarks on this exciting new chapter ahead of its future move to Prestwich Village Centre, forming part of the £100 million redevelopment of the Longfield Centre.

Bury Council and nationwide placemaker Muse are working together to regenerate and provide a new beating heart for Prestwich Village.
