A friendly reminder from TAC: This coming Sunday (June 18th) is Father's Day in the UK

2023 UK Father's Day is Sunday June 18th

Origin of Father's Day

Fatherly advice. 1900s

The Father's Day holiday was founded in 1910 by American Sonora Smart Dodd in honour of her own parent, William Jackson Smart, a Civil War veteran who raised her with 5 siblings as a single parent in Spokane, Washington. Sonora was motivated by the recent creation of the Mother's Day holiday three years previously.

In many parts of Europe, Mother's Day blends with a centuries old traditional, ecumenical holiday called Mothering Sunday, although the latter was actually about returning to one's 'mother church' rather than celebrating our maternal parent.

Father's Day received boosts in popularity with every major 20th century war and is now officially celebrated in 111 countries, albeit in different ways and on different dates.

Easy to forget

Despite its universal observance, Father's Day generates only about 66% of the revenue that Mother's Day does in the UK.

In a classic 'chicken and egg' paradox, businesses spend less on advertising for Father's day than they do for Mother's Day, citing the lower spending generated by the former. This means we don't get as many useful adverts on TV, radio and other media as reminders.

Father with newborn son

Don't be fooled, Dad might act more stoic about his forgotten holiday, but deep down he is the same as mum. He appreciates being appreciated. We need to rely on ourselves to get the date right, and unlike with birthdays, the date of Father's Day changes every year.

So act now

If you are lucky enough to have your father still around and in your life, you have time to order a card from Moonpig, book a restaurant or plan some other appropriate gesture. Fathers give us so much, and in one way or another they dedicate their existence to making our own lives as full and successful as possible. Dad's don't even tell us about every sacrifice they make for us, in the same way as we probably won't tell our own children about everything we do for them.

So grab this chance to show your father in some small way that you love him, and appreciate everything he has done or even still does.

Time together: precious
