First new intercity train for Devon and Cornwall arrives in the UK

The first Intercity Express Train bound for GWR’s Devon and Cornwall route has now arrived in the UK. From 2018 a new fleet of Class 802 Intercity Express Trains will connect London Paddington to Exeter, Plymouth, Penzance and many more communities.

On Tuesday 8th August, the first of Great Western Railway’s Intercity Express Trains for Devon and Cornwall carried out test runs in Somerset, between Bruton and Cogload. Two more trains are due to arrive in the South West within the coming weeks as part of a comprehensive test programme.

On 13 June 1842, Queen Victoria made the journey from Slough to Paddington and became the first British monarch to travel by train. The train that day was driven by Daniel Gooch and assisted by Isambard Kingdom Brunel. To mark this unique occasion GWR recreated the journey using its new Hitachi-built Intercity Express Train, in the presence of HM The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh.

Hitachi begins work on Virgin Trains’ Azuma fleet

Virgin Trains’ customers are a step closer to new trains as work begins on the Azuma (Class 800) fleet, due to enter service on the east coast in 2018. Work on the bodyshells is taking place in Kasado, Japan, before the trains arrive in the UK to be built by Hitachi’s manufacturing team at Newton Aycliffe, County Durham. UK build work on the Virgin Azuma will begin this summer.
