TransPennine Express customers are a step closer to experiencing brand new, high quality trains as Hitachi begins work an intercity fleet to start service in 2019. Production work has begun on two test trains in Japan which will arrive in the UK in 2018. The modern Japanese bullet train inspired fleet is being built by Hitachi and financed by Angel Trains.

For the first time since the Metrorail system opened its doors to passengers back in 1984, the Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTPW) placed its first new train into service today – ushering in a new era of modern, high tech trains manufactured by Hitachi Rail Italy that will improve both service reliability and overall riding experience.

The first of a fleet of fully fitted electric Class 385 trains is set to arrive in Scotland. The new train will join the two test trains currently completing their final phase of route testing between Edinburgh – Glasgow. Transport Minister Humza Yousaf got on board the brand new train while it did its latest run on Hitachi’s test track at the Newton Aycliffe factory, near Darlington.

Great Western Railway’s brand new Intercity Express Train carried passengers for the first time on Monday 16th October, marking the start of the biggest fleet upgrade on the Great Western in almost 40 years. Providing more seats, more frequent trains, and shorter, more comfortable journeys the Hitachi built Train came into service operating from Bristol Temple Meads to London Paddington.

A new intercity train bound for passengers next year reached a major test milestone today as it reached Edinburgh station for the first time. Train manufacturer Hitachi carried out the test journey between Doncaster and Edinburgh Waverley station, where passers-by were able to catch a glimpse of the new train on platform 7.

The company already trains 54 apprentices to build trains at their manufacturing site at Newton Aycliffe, County Durham. On Tuesday 8th August, the first of Great Western Railway’s Intercity Express Trains for Devon and Cornwall carried out test runs in Somerset, between Bruton and Cogload. Two more trains are due to arrive in the South West within the coming weeks as part of a comprehensive test programme.

Hitachi’s new intercity trains, due to enter passenger service this autumn, have passed tests to run their digital technology required by the Department for Transport.
