Press release -

Hövding – the invisible cycle helmet – hits the shops!

“After seven years of development, it’s fantastic that we’re finally able to start selling Hövding in DesignTorget’s stores and on our website. The product is now CE labelled and we’re really proud to have produced protection for cyclists that saves their lives without wrecking their hair,” says Terese Alstin, one of Hövding’s inventors.

Based in Malmö in southern Sweden, Hövding, which won the world’s most prestigious design contest the Index:Award this autumn, has developed a completely new type of cycle helmet that doesn’t even go on your head. Instead it’s an understated collar that cyclists wear round their necks. The collar contains a folded up airbag that you’ll only see if you happen to have an accident. The airbag is shaped like a hood, surrounding and protecting the cyclist’s head when it’s triggered. The trigger mechanism is controlled by sensors which pick up the abnormal movements the cyclist makes in an accident.

From Friday 11 November Hövding will be available to buy via the company’s website www.hovding.com and from DesignTorget’s stores in Sweden and Norway. The recommended retail price is SEK 3,998 including VAT.

The sales launch and Hövding’s world premiere will be celebrated with a fashion show in Stockholm’s Sergels Torg on Thursday 10 November from 7 to 7.15 p.m.

Hövding - Airbag for cyclists

Hövding started out in 2005 as a master’s thesis by the two founders Anna Haupt and Terese Alstin, who, at the time, were studying Industrial Design at the University of Lund.

The project resulted in the concept of an airbag helmet, which won Innovationsbron’s Ideas Grant. This kick-started the process of developing Hövding into a real product. In 2006 Hövding won the Venture Cup, after which Hövding Sweden AB was founded.

Over the years Hövding has grown from just two people with a great idea, to a NASDAQ-listed company that handle everything from development and production to marketing and sales. Today Hövding consists of a team of around 30 people, all triggered by the word impossible, and Hövding’s airbag for cyclists is available in 16 markets across Europe.

The headquarters are located in an old chocolate factory in Malmö – the sixth greatest cycling city in the world. Final assembly of Hövding is carried out in association with the Japanese Company Nihon Plast.
