Broadcaster and former athlete Jeanette Kwakye MBE to host Active London 2021

TV and radio presenter and former athlete Jeanette Kwakye has been named as host of the London Sport’s Active London conference on Tuesday 21 and Wednesday 22 September.

A five-time British Champion and 100m finalist at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Kwakye has spent much of the summer in Tokyo covering the Olympic and Paralympic Games while many Londoners will recognise her as a presenter BBC Radio London.

It will be the first time that Active London will have an external host pulling together themes from across the two-day digital conference which is online for the second year.

Active London is the largest annual conference dedicated wholly to the future of physical activity and sport in the nation’s capital and attracts thought leaders, decision makers, policymakers, and professional and community organisations from across the city.

The two-day digital event will explore a series of themes that build on the remarkable work that has taken place during the pandemic and the ways the sector can embrace change, reconnect and rebuild for the better.

Kwakye joins a stellar line-up of speakers for Active London including Public Health England London’s Professor Kevin Fenton, London Recovery Board Co-Chair Georgia Gould and the Mayor of London’s Walking and Cycling Commissioner Will Norman.

Attendees at Active London will also be able to hear from London 2012 Paralympian and inclusion expert Claire Harvey who now works as Global Inclusion Lead for Vodafone and many other speakers.

Jeanette Kwakye said:

“As a former athlete I understand just how important the grassroots physical activity and sport sector is in providing opportunities for Londoners to get and stay active.

“Clubs and groups have had an extremely tough past 18 months but the importance of physical activity and sport for people’s physical and mental wellbeing has never been clearer.

“I’m really looking forward to getting stuck into Active London and supporting the expert speakers and attendees to get the most from the two-day conference.”

Rachel Rowe, London Sport Event Manager, said:

“We’re delighted to have an experienced and knowledgeable host in Jeanette Kwakye who will be an expert guide for our speakers and attendees at Active London.

“Active London is a fantastic learning and development opportunity for our physical activity and grassroots sport sector in London and we hope that having a friendly and consistent face and voice in Jeanette will really lift the event experience.”
