Illustration ruff genes
Schematic illustration of the evolution of the ruff ‘supergene’. The evolutionary process started with an inversion about 4 million years ago. The altered orientation of genes is illustrated with three of the about 90 genes in the interval. Additional genetic changes have occurred subsequent to the inversion and these have led to the evolution of the Satellite and Faeder male morphs.
