Press release -

Norwegian princess surfs up!

On Saturday October 24, 16 years old Norwegian Princess Ingrid Alexandra won the Norwegian National Junior Championship in surfing at Borestranden beach at Jæren, near Stavanger. Crown Prince Haakon, Crown Princess Mette-Marit and Prince Sverre Magnus were present to witness Princess Ingrid Alexandra in the competition.

Princess Ingrid Alexandra is the elder child of Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit. She is second in line to succeed her grandfather King Harald V.

In 2017 the Royal Family went surfing together at Hoddevik beach on the west coast of Norway in connection with the European Championship Eurosurf. The Crown Prince was part of the event committee and has in the past been an avid surfer along with is daughter and son Prince Sverre Magnus.

But it is not only the princess in the Royal Family who is an active athlete. Her grandfather, King Harald V was an avid sailor for many years and has participated in several world championships in sailing. He also partook in the Olympics in 1964, 1968, 1972, and in 1987 he also took a World Cup gold together with his crew. Even the princess' grand grandfather, King Olav V won a gold medal in sailing in the Olympics in Amsterdam in 1928.

In recent years, Norway has earned its deserved place as an international surfing destination. From Lofoten in the north to the beaches near Stavanger in the southwest you can enjoy excellent conditions for surfing. The surf season lasts from February to November: summer (May - September) is most welcoming for beginners, while the late autumn and winter (September - May) offer rougher and tougher waves for more experienced surfers. According to specialists the best beaches to surf in Norway are JærenStadt in Nordfjord and Unstad in Lofoten and in Norway you can even experience surfing under the Norhern lights.
