Press release -

Oslo Named Top Destination to Visit in 2018 by Lonely Planet

Lonely Planet has selected Oslo - as the only Scandinavian city –  as one of the 10 best cities in the world to visit in 2018. The Norwegian capital is, among other things, highlighted for its combination of exciting architecture, art, food and nature experiences.

The international travel guide Lonely Planet has just announced its annual “Best in Travel” list that declares 10 travel destinations that you, according to Lonely Planet’s travel experts, should add to your bucket list for the coming year.

Among other things, Lonely Planet highlights Oslo’s mix of urban atmosphere and green areas: “Showing off doesn’t really come naturally to Oslo: First and foremost, this is a city to live in, with parks to get lost in, waterways to wander and fjords to kayak – not to mention a coffee culture that equals Stockholm or Copenhagen”, writes Lonely Planet about the city.

A growing travel destination
The designation of Oslo as a hit travel destination comes in a period when the Norwegian capital is experiencing increasing interest from visitors. In five years, the number of guest bed-nights has increased by 35 percent – from 458,000 in August of 2012 to 619,000 in August of 2017.

The country’s national tourist council, Visit Norway, is expecting the "Top Destination to Visit" stamp by Lonely Planet to increase awareness of Norway as a travel destination:

“This is fantastic news! Moving forward, we wish to show more of our cities, food and culture – in addition to the spectacular landscapes that Norway is famous for. This is verified proof that we’re making our mark in this field too. I believe an international ranking of this magnitude will turn more heads towards Norway and Oslo. The exposure this list generates will trigger more curiosity worldwide and give people numerous reasons to visit”, says Bente Bratland Holm, director of Visit Norway.

Oslo tips
In connection with the publication of the 2018 guide, Lonely Planet has produced a short video presentation of Oslo that highlights some of the city’s architecture, art, food and nature experiences.
