#VolunteersWeek - Meet Afia, Hasnath's mum

When Afia’s son, Hasnath, was three years old he was diagnosed with an enlarged heart and liver. He required urgent treatment at Newcastle’s Freeman Hospital as he waited for a lifesaving heart transplant. During his time at the specialist hospital, we supported Afia and her family at Scott House. Thankfully, Hasnath received his new heart and two years later is doing really well and is even back at school.

Mum Afia has been volunteering for us since we supported her family, and this year has been instrumental in raising awareness of The Sick Children’s Trust Big Chocolate Tea. Afia has been encouraging others to raise at least £30 so The Sick Children’s Trust can continue to support families like hers with free ‘Home from Home’ accommodation.

Caroline O’Doherty, Campaign and Appeals Manager says: “Afia has been able to volunteer for The Sick Children’s Trust in her home town, promoting Big Chocolate Tea when she’s out and about in the community. This helped us to raise awareness for the campaign in a place we wouldn’t ordinarily be able to reach. We’ve worked with Afia over the phone and via email and she’s been a great help and a real pleasure to work with – her positivity and enthusiasm shine through!”

Thank you Afia, for all your support and hard work.
