New research suggests coeliac disease can influence confidence, wellbeing and everyday life in ways that traditional medical assessments may overlook.

Could coeliac disease affect more than we realise?

One of the most thought-provoking submissions to the AOECS Scientific Book 2025 explored something many people with coeliac disease already know from everyday experience: the condition affects far more than just digestion.

Researchers in Hungary studied how coeliac disease impacts overall wellbeing, including feelings of stability, freedom, achievement and quality of life. Their findings suggest that many people living with the condition experience limitations that are often invisible in traditional medical assessments.

Interestingly, standard health questionnaires appeared to underestimate the broader emotional and social impact of coeliac disease.

The researchers found that people with coeliac disease reported noticeably lower wellbeing than the general population across several areas of daily life — even when physical symptoms were relatively controlled.

The study highlights a growing recognition within coeliac disease research: living gluten-free is not simply a dietary adjustment, but something that can influence social life, mental wellbeing and everyday confidence.
