19 Hotels Awarded Green Key Certification: Now the Real Work Begins
As of August 10th 2026, all Core Hospitality hotels are Green Key certified. The certification brings the hotels’ environmental efforts together under a shared framework and will serve as an active tool for setting targets, documenting initiatives and reducing environmental impact.
An environmental certification is more than just a label. For Core Hospitality, which operates the Marriott brands Fairfield, Residence Inn and Four Points Flex in Denmark, Green Key is first and foremost a practical tool for turning environmental ambitions into concrete, systematic action across its hotels.
"Green Key helps us set clear targets and requirements for where we can make a difference. At the same time, the certification provides us with a shared framework that we can continue to build on," says Sebina Christiansen, Project Coordinator at Core Hospitality.
The certification builds on Core Hospitality’s CSR policy, under which each hotel works with local targets in areas including water, energy and waste. The aim is not only to implement initiatives, but also to measure and document their impact.
From water consumption to waste sorting
The certification process has already led to tangible changes. Among other measures, the hotels have reduced water consumption and strengthened their approach to waste management, with a focus on recycling as much waste as possible and disposing of the remainder in the most environmentally responsible way possible.
Communication with guests has also been strengthened, making it clearer which environmental initiatives the hotels are working on and how guests can contribute during their stay. The Green Key certification is therefore intended to make these efforts more visible to guests without compromising the quality and comfort they experience during their stay.
At the same time, the hotels have very different starting points. Core Hospitality operates hotels in both modern properties and buildings with more than 300 years of history, meaning that the opportunities for implementing specific measures vary from one hotel to another.
"Our hotels have different physical settings and therefore different opportunities for making environmental improvements. This applies to both newer properties and historic buildings, such as our Four Points Flex hotel in Roskilde. What matters is not that everyone does exactly the same thing, but that we are all moving in the same direction and making the most of the opportunities that make sense for each individual hotel," explains Sebina Christiansen, Project Coordinator at Core Hospitality.
Building on existing initiatives
Even before achieving the Green Key certification, the hotels were already working with a range of green initiatives, including reducing resource consumption and extending the lifespan of materials, furniture and fixtures.
These initiatives include towel reuse for longer stays, donating and repairing furniture and textiles, offering tap water as an alternative to bottled water, bicycle rentals, EV charging stations, sedum roofs on several properties, and solar panels at several hotels.
The certification does not mark the end of the initiatives already implemented. On the contrary, Green Key will serve as a foundation for setting new targets and continuously identifying further opportunities for the hotels to reduce their environmental impact.
"What matters most to us is that Green Key does not become a certification we achieve and then forget all about it. It should be an active tool that helps us continuously set new targets and identify the areas where we can do even better," says Peter Haaber, CEO of Core Hospitality.
