Canadian Green Shipping Corridors Initiative: Germany is the First Country to Join
The German federal government has become the first member of a Canadian initiative to develop green shipping corridors. The goal is to jointly advance decarbonization in the maritime sector. Specifically, the aim is to establish green sea routes between Eastern Canada (including Halifax and Montreal) and key ports in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, where climate-neutral technologies will be deployed.
The voluntary partnership aims to acquire additional members along the maritime value chain in the future to strengthen synergies and sustainably promote the industry's innovation potential. The Federal Ministry of Transport emphasizes its commitment to promoting green shipping corridors as part of the National Action Plan for Climate-Friendly Shipping. Specifically, funding from the Climate and Transformation Fund will be provided for this purpose.
"For Germany, international cooperation in the decarbonization of maritime shipping is of paramount importance. We therefore support the adoption of globally binding measures at the International Maritime Organization as well as strong global partnerships to achieve real progress towards a sustainable and climate-friendly maritime sector as quickly as possible. I thank Canada for this initiative," said State Secretary Dr. Claudia Elif Stutz at the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding in Ottawa.
