EWE and Salzgitter Conclude Contract for the Supply of Green Hydrogen
Energy provider EWE and Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH, a subsidiary of Salzgitter AG, have signed a long-term agreement for the supply of green hydrogen. The contract was signed in June at EWE's Berlin office in the presence of Parliamentary State Secretary Gitta Connemann and Lower Saxony's Minister-President Olaf Lies.
This is Salzgitter AG's first major contract with a hydrogen supplier. The company is also the first major customer of EWE's planned 320-megawatt electrolysis plant in Emden. From 2030 onward, approximately 10,000 tons of hydrogen are to be delivered annually via the hydrogen core grid. The contract, initially for seven years, markets a significant portion of the plant's first expansion phase and covers approximately 6.5 percent of the hydrogen demand of the SALCOS transformation program. This program is designed to structurally reorganize Salzgitter AG towards the near-climate-neutral production of steel.
Stefan Dohler, CEO of EWE, described the agreement as an important milestone for building a functioning hydrogen economy. The contract demonstrates that supply and demand are increasingly converging. Now, it is crucial to capitalize on the positive signals from the market and regulatory environment and to initiate further partnerships along the hydrogen value chain.
