Gasunie is Creating Additional Transport Capacity for Biomethane

At the end of July, Gasunie commissioned a new connection between the gas grids in the Dutch provinces of Zeeland and North Brabant. The grid link between Axel and Ossendrecht creates additional transport capacity for biomethane. This gives existing and future producers more opportunities to feed renewable gas into the long-distance pipeline grid and supply consumers in households, industry, and transportation.

Gasunie is using an existing natural gas pipeline for the connection, which will no longer be needed for natural gas transport. Avoiding new construction reduces material usage and minimizes environmental impact. The project addresses the seasonally fluctuating demand for gas: While biomethane is produced year-round, regional surpluses occur, particularly in the summer. The new connection makes it possible to transport these surpluses to regions with higher demand, thus creating additional capacity for further expansion of biomethane production.

Gasunie points out that Dutch biomethane production increased by 14 percent last year, and the number of producers rose from 92 to 108. Further infrastructure measures, including new biomethane boosters in Tilburg and Mill, are intended to further facilitate the injection of renewable gases into the national transmission grid in the coming years.
