German-Finnish Cooperation Strengthens the European Hydrogen Market
Germany and Finland are intensifying their cooperation in the hydrogen sector, thereby strengthening their position in the European market. The focus is on the commissioning of the first industrial-scale green hydrogen plant in Harjavalta, Finland, built by the Finnish company P2X Solutions Oy. The plant's centerpiece is a 20-megawatt electrolyzer from the German manufacturer Sunfire SE, based in Dresden.
In addition to hydrogen production, a methanization plant is also being built on-site, which will supply synthetic methane in the future. An initial offtake agreement with Danisco Sweeteners already secures the industrial use of the green hydrogen for CO₂ reduction in food production.
While Germany needs to expand its imports of green hydrogen to achieve its climate targets by 2045, Finland is positioning itself as a strong supplier: With a virtually emission-free electricity mix, favorable energy prices, and significant expansion potential, the country plans to produce ten percent of the EU's total hydrogen domestically by 2030.
The Oulu region also plays a key role, developing into an investment hotspot with its port, renewable energy resources, and infrastructure projects such as the Nordic Hydrogen Route. German companies like Abo Energy and Energiequelle have already received permits for new hydrogen projects there.
Business Finland is working closely with German federal states and initiatives to promote further cooperation in research, production, and infrastructure. Both countries see hydrogen as a key technology for an independent, climate-neutral European industry.
Herkko Plit, Chairman of the Board of Hydrogen Cluster Finland, sees hydrogen as a key to a free and industrialized Europe. He also emphasizes Finland's importance as a supplier of biogenic CO₂, which is used, for example, to produce synthetic fuels. This is supported by Finland's unparalleled clean energy, its technical expertise, and its investor-friendly environment. "We look forward to leveraging close cooperation with German companies and invite local and global players to drive sustainable innovation and business," he said.
