Germany and the Czech Republic Strengthen Cooperation on Hydrogen Infrastructure

Germany and the Czech Republic aim to significantly enhance their bilateral cooperation in the field of hydrogen infrastructure and thereby advance the development of a cross-border hydrogen network. As the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action announced yesterday, a joint working group will address technical, regulatory, and economic aspects of hydrogen network integration. The project’s goal is to use existing pipelines and transmission infrastructure for the bidirectional transport of hydrogen and thus create a central network for hydrogen transport in Central Europe.

Both countries emphasize the importance of an integrated hydrogen supply: the emerging hydrogen core network is to be strengthened so that the Czech industry can also be supplied with hydrogen in a climate-friendly manner.

The working group also includes representatives of the German gas transmission system operators Open Grid Europe, a member of DIE GAS- UND WASSERSTOFFWIRTSCHAFT, and GASCADE Gastransport, as well as the Czech network operators NaTran and NET4GAS.

With the establishment of the working group, a concrete instrument is being created to implement the German-Czech memorandum of understanding on hydrogen infrastructure signed in spring 2025. The participating network operators and industrial companies are expected to work closely with both governments to enable coordinated and needs-based infrastructure planning.
