HES and North Atlantic Agree on Hydrogen Corridor Via Wilhelmshaven
HES International and the Canadian energy company North Atlantic signed a framework agreement in May to develop a hydrogen import chain via the Port of Wilhelmshaven. The plan is to transport hydrogen using LOHC (Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier) technology, in which hydrogen is chemically bound in liquid carrier media. The signing took place in Berlin in the presence of Lower Saxony's Minister of Economic Affairs, Grant Hendrik Tonne.
This cooperation aims to further develop Wilhelmshaven as a strategic location for the European hydrogen economy. HES International intends to examine how existing facilities at the liquid bulk terminal can be used and retrofitted for the import, storage, and onward transport of hydrogen in LOHC form. The goal is to contribute to the long-term decarbonization of industrial energy supply.
HES CEO Paul van Gelder stated that Wilhelmshaven is one of Europe's most strategically important energy hubs. The agreement with North Atlantic underscores the approach of utilizing existing infrastructure for next-generation energy carriers.
