Market consultation for a cross-border hydrogen corridor in the Baltic region

The project partners behind the Nordic-Baltic Hydrogen Corridor (NBHC) have launched a market consultation for the project. Through this consultation, the partners aim to gather early, non-binding market feedback in order to validate ongoing feasibility studies and to give additional stakeholders the opportunity to actively help shape the project’s further development.

The consultation is addressed to hydrogen producers and consumers, distribution network operators, storage operators, as well as companies active in hydrogen transport. They are invited to submit non-binding information by the end of March on planned production and consumption volumes, infrastructure projects, and cross-border transport needs along the corridor.

The project, which has been designated a Project of Common Interest (PCI) by the European Union, already entered the feasibility phase in 2025. By 2027, national and cross-border studies are to be completed, with their results forming the basis for decisions on the next phase of the project. The Nordic-Baltic Hydrogen Corridor is planned to span around 2,500 kilometers and connect six European countries: Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, and Germany. In the long term, the corridor is expected to transport up to 2.7 million tonnes of hydrogen per year from 2040 onwards. Commercial operations are scheduled to start in 2033.

The project partners emphasize that the development of a dedicated hydrogen backbone in the Baltic region would make a significant contribution to reducing Europe’s dependence on fossil energy imports. Ralph Bahke, Managing Director for Control and Development at ONTRAS GmbH, stresses that the corridor is intended to enable large-scale industrial decarbonization and to stimulate investment in renewable energy and hydrogen technologies. In addition, the project is seen as playing an important role in European integration, as it would strengthen regional cooperation and enhance the competitiveness of the participating regions.
