OMV is Building One of Europe's Largest Electrolysis Plants for Sustainable Hydrogen

With the groundbreaking ceremony for one of Europe's largest hydrogen electrolysis plants, OMV is setting another milestone on its path to a climate-neutral energy future. The 140 MW plant in Bruck an der Leitha is scheduled to go into operation at the end of 2027. OMV will produce up to 23,000 tons of hydrogen annually using renewable energy from wind, solar, and hydropower, thus making a significant contribution to reducing the company's CO2 emissions.

The green hydrogen from the new, local production facility will be used primarily at the OMV Schwechat refinery, contributing to the decarbonization of the fuel and chemical products produced there. OMV expects this to result in an annual reduction of up to 150,000 tons of CO₂ emissions* – approximately 10 percent of the refinery's current direct, production-related emissions.

A 22-kilometer hydrogen pipeline is being built between Bruck an der Leitha and Schwechat to supply the hydrogen. The necessary permits have already been granted. OMV is investing a mid-three-digit million euro amount in this project. In addition, funding from the European Hydrogen Bank and the Austrian Hydrogen Bank is expected to be signed for the project later this year.

For implementation, OMV is relying on a consortium led by Siemens Energy, which, as the EPC (Engineering, Procurement, Construction) partner, will handle the planning, procurement, and construction. Siemens Energy will supply key components such as electrolysis stacks, transformers, rectifiers, and compressors. STRABAG will be responsible for the construction, contributing its expertise in industrial infrastructure and overseeing the construction of all buildings.

"The construction of our state-of-the-art green hydrogen plant is a clear sign of the energy transition. We are creating an integrated ecosystem around green hydrogen – supported by technological innovation, modern infrastructure, political support, and strong partnerships. As a means of decarbonizing our fuel production, green hydrogen is a central component of our Strategy 2030 and a key to OMV's responsible transformation. With this project, we are reaffirming our long-term commitment to sustainable energy solutions and strengthening our role as a pioneer in the development and supply of green hydrogen," said Alfred Stern, Chairman of the Executive Board and CEO of OMV.
