OMV Receives EIB Loan for 140 MW Electrolyzer

In July, OMV received a €450 million loan from the European Investment Bank (EIB) for the construction of a 140 MW electrolyzer at its Schwechat refinery near Bruck an der Leitha. The total investment amounts to approximately €600 million. The plant is scheduled to go into operation at the end of 2027 and will produce up to 23,000 tons of green hydrogen annually. This hydrogen will be used primarily for the production of more sustainable fuels and chemical products.

According to OMV, the use of green hydrogen will reduce CO₂ emissions from the Schwechat refinery and the fuels and chemical products it produces by around ten percent. By 2030, the company plans to expand its production capacity for renewable fuels and sustainable chemical feedstocks to around 900,000 tons per year.

Reinhard Florey, Deputy Chairman of the Executive Board and CFO of OMV, described the construction of one of the largest green hydrogen plants in Europe as an important milestone for the decarbonization of industrial processes. The loan commitment from the European Investment Bank is also a strong signal of confidence in the company's transformation strategy.
