TENP III Commissioned – Modern Infrastructure for Gas and Hydrogen Transport from Western to Southern Germany

The Trans-European Natural Gas Pipeline (TENP III), a joint project by transmission system operators Open Grid Europe (OGE) and Fluxys, has been officially commissioned. The approximately 110-kilometer-long pipeline replaces one strand of the TENP, which runs from the German-Belgian and German-Dutch borders to the Swiss border. In parallel with modernization efforts in recent years, the TENP has played a key role in maintaining gas flows and ensuring a secure and sustainable energy supply.

Since 2022, the TENP pipeline has been replaced in three construction phases in Rhineland-Palatinate and Baden-Württemberg as part of the TENP III project. The technically necessary replacement of the pipeline took place along almost 93 percent of the existing route. Construction was successfully completed in the summer of 2025. Final remaining work along the route is expected to be carried out during ongoing operations over the coming weeks.

The TENP makes a significant contribution to security of supply in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, and Europe. It strengthens the connection between Northwestern Europe and the Italian gas market and increases transport capacity to Switzerland by enabling bidirectional use of the pipeline. At the same time, the newly created infrastructure is already fully designed for future hydrogen transport. Together with other partners, OGE and Fluxys are exploring the possibility of transporting hydrogen from Italy through Switzerland and the TENP to Germany. This initiative aims to enhance the diversification of Europe’s hydrogen supply and support the achievement of climate goals.
