thyssenkrupp Secures Order for Australian Project to Produce Green Iron
The Australian company Progressive Green Solutions (PGS) has selected thyssenkrupp nucera as its preferred supplier of electrolysers with a total capacity of 1.4 gigawatts (GW) for the planned Mid-West Green Iron Project in Western Australia.
The project foresees an annual production of up to 7 million tonnes of green iron pellets. Part of this will be further processed in the Mid-West region into around 2.5 million tonnes of green hot briquetted iron (HBI). Production will be based on renewable energy, green hydrogen, and locally sourced magnetite iron ore. This is expected to reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 90 percent compared to conventional steel production.
Production is scheduled to start in 2029, positioning the Mid-West region as a hub for green iron. PGS is planning to expand capacity to up to 30 million tonnes of green pellets and 10 million tonnes of green HBI per year.
thyssenkrupp nucera will supply electrolysers for highly efficient alkaline water electrolysis, which also offers strong scalability.
The project is still in the planning phase and will be further developed jointly by thyssenkrupp nucera and PGS towards an EPF contract (Engineering, Procurement, Fabrication). A final investment decision has not yet been made.
