Uniper Submits Planning Application for Green Hydrogen in the Humber Area
Uniper has submitted the planning application for the proposed "Humber H₂ub (Green)" project, which is to be implemented on the site of the Killingholme facility in the Humber industrial area. The project aims to build an industrial electrolysis plant for the production of green hydrogen to decarbonize industrial processes in the region. In the initial phase, an electrolysis capacity of around 120 MW is planned, with the possibility of future expansion. The produced hydrogen is intended to be used primarily at the Phillips 66 Limited Humber Refinery to replace fuel gases in industrial furnaces and significantly reduce the refinery’s Scope 1 emissions.
With this project, Uniper promises not only positive environmental effects but also economic benefits for the region. During the construction phase and subsequent operation of the plant, sustainable jobs are expected to be created. Furthermore, the project is expected to make a significant contribution to regional value creation and provide momentum for infrastructure development as well as industrial transformation.
"This is an important next step towards getting the necessary permission to construct this facility at our Killingholme site," emphasizes Guy Phillips, Team Lead Business Development Hydrogen at Uniper UK. "The availability of low carbon hydrogen will be essential to retaining industry in the Humber region and for economic growth."
