Bastian Buus fighting for the championship in GTWC finale
The Danish Porsche factory driver is in contention for the championship title as the GT World Challenge Europe Sprint Cup finale takes place this coming weekend in Valencia.
Bastian Buus has the chance to add yet another trophy to his collection when the fifth and final round of the GT World Challenge Europe Sprint Cup is held at Circuit Ricardo Tormo in Valencia this coming weekend. Together with his teammate Bashar Mardini and Lionspeed GP, the Danish Porsche factory driver currently holds second place in the Bronze Cup standings – and with the field running extremely close, the outcome could swing from triumph to disappointment.
“This is one of those finales where there is a lot at stake. Only a few points separate us from the leaders, which means we can decide the race ourselves – we are not dependent on our rivals making a mistake. At the same time, we are also being closely chased by the other teams and could actually risk dropping out of the championship podium altogether,” says Bastian Buus.
Buus, Mardini, and the rest of Lionspeed GP arrive at the finale directly from a strong round at Magny-Cours, where the German squad secured its second win of the season and climbed the standings. However, with only 13.5 points separating the top four teams – and 35 points still up for grabs across the weekend’s two sprint races – nothing has been decided yet.
“In other words, everything is still open, and there are several favorites for the title. We are going to push hard for the championship, but it requires us to be right at the top of our performance, avoid mistakes, and take the chances we get – without risking it all.”
The fifth and final round of the GT World Challenge Europe Sprint Cup takes place on Saturday, September 20, and Sunday, September 21, with the green flag waving at 14:00 on both days. Both races will be streamed live on YouTube.
